Still a long way from making tricky things, but just finished the shop class at school, so I can then use the equipment unsupervised.
The shop there is crazy. They have 4-5 2,000lb bridgeports, a Tree, a programmable bridgeport, a bunch of lathes and then a bunch of CNC equipment (not allowed to use). They make all the high end physics experimental equipment there, so the quality of the tools is fantastic.
Still a long way from making anything tricky, but the first project they had us do was pretty useful:
Showed how to indicate the part's position to .001s, square up the sides perfectly, drill, tap, press fit, and generally double check a bunch of things in multiple ways so you'd not have a sad face.
Seeing a mill cut metal like butter was very cool.
Where did you take your class? Stanford? I just finished up a CNC class at Delta in Stockton. I've been a machinist 25 years and I finally got to play with the CNC toys!
